He is one of the leading basic and clinical scientists in the field of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) of the musculoskeletal system, with more than 35 related publications listed in PubMed (out of more than 170 publications (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/myncbi/browse/collection/50880958/?sort=date&direction=descending).

His formal medical training includes a M.D. degree and a Ph.D. degree equivalent ("Habilitation") from RWTH Aachen University (Aachen, Germany). He is also active in a number of professional societies and related organizations, among them the Clinical Sciences & Research Committee of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM).

Dr. Schmitz has been awarded more than 2 million euros in peer reviewed grants as Principal Investigator. He is currently involved in a number of scientific collaboration projects on ESWT with professional soccer clubs in Germany, as well as with leading specialists on physical and rehabilitation medicine in China.
