Dr Verheyden steers a team investigating novel approaches in motor assessment, recovery and rehabilitation in the different phases post stroke. Main research areas are upper limb, trunk and balance rehabilitation through behavioral, kinematic, neurophysiological and neuroimaging methodologies. His work is funded through KU Leuven, national, European and international grants.
Dr Verheyden is also faculty consultant at the stroke and head injury rehabilitation ward of the university hospitals Leuven, and treats patients with acquired brain injury. Since 2016, he is editor-in-chief of Physiotherapy Research International. In 2017, he served as an expert for the World Health Organization for the Rehabilitation 2030: a call for action meeting, and he is current member of the neurorehabilitation/robotics committee of the European Stroke Organisation
